In the remote valleys of Nepal, it is very difficult to obtain precise information on rainfall. Only community testimonies and indicators such as mudslides, the volume of temporary watering points, etc., allow us to estimate actual rainfall quantities.

In order to obtain better data, Kanchan Nepal and IRHA are installing automatic weather stations to measure basic parameters such as sunshine, rainfall, wind speed and direction, and temperature. All these data can be downloaded freely and virtually live (if internet connection allows it...) from the following website:

These data make it easier to measure rainwater harvesting potential, and to anticipate potential drought and/or flooding. In addition, better knowledge of rainfall volumes is essential for communities that subsist mainly on rain-fed agriculture.

Coupled with online access, a screen for live display of information is installed near the weather station to allows everyone to be informed. Contacts have already been made with local universities and Nepal's weather forecasting division, which are keen to expand their sensor network.
