Rain Communities

Cambodia, Central Cardamom Mountains, Phnom Kravah National Park area

Disaster Risk Management & Ecosystem Restoration

2025–2028 · Under development

Landscape & Rainfall Context

Rural and mountainous areas increasingly exposed to climate related hazards, including recurrent droughts and floods. These events contribute to aquifer depletion, water contamination, and limited access to safe drinking water. During the 2016 drought, 37 percent of households reported water shortages. Climate projections indicate more frequent and intense heatwaves and droughts, with significant impacts on water availability, hygiene, and public health. Limited access to water and sanitation particularly affects women, children, schools, and health facilities.

Project Focus

Improve water security, hygiene, and community resilience by strengthening rainwater harvesting systems, local governance, and community led management of water resources.

Key Solutions Implemented

Rainwater harvesting systems for schools and health centres | Public rainwater collection and distribution systems | Household rainwater harvesting and sanitation systems for vulnerable populations | Community mobilisation and participatory implementation | Water management committees and local governance structures | Technical training for construction, operation, and maintenance | Hygiene promotion and behaviour change activities | Social marketing to stimulate local demand
